E Pule Kakou

On Thanksgiving eve, November 26, 2008, churches, schools, organizations, and workplaces from all over Hawaii came together in prayer. Here are the praise reports that show God's answer to those gatherings!

Cick here to add your praise report to this page!

The spiritual climate over Hawai’i has changed!  Here are some of the praise reports from our first E Pule Kakou event in November 2008:

“The two football teams from Leilehua and Punahou are kneeling in the center of the field and praying together.  I have never seen this before!” exclaimed the radio broadcaster at the conclusion of the Division I High School Football State Championship Game.

“The boss of the surf shop where I work began our store meeting by saying ‘E Pule Kakou’ and started praying.  I had never seen this before and I was shocked!”  ~College Student

“This was the best prayer service we’ve had in a long time!”
~Pastor of a major church in Honolulu.

“This was the best the prayer service we’ve ever had!”
~Pastor of a church in Kailua

“We had healings break out in our E Pule Kakou service and people were healed!”  ~Pastor from Kauai

Thousands of students from grade school to high school joined in prayer on that day at Kapalama Campus.  We’ve never had that kind of prayer that I can remember.  We prayed for over thirty minutes and the longest prayers we had before that were 30 seconds!  One student came up to me and said that it was the best chapel we’ve ever had.”  ~School Kahu, Kamehameha Schools

“In the days immediately following E Pule Kakou, I looked to see what kind of spiritual climate changes would emerge as a result of our prayers.  Then my wife returned from shopping at Costco and told me an incredible story.  She said that she had found everything she needed except that she could not find the butter.  Finally she gave up and stood in line.  While she was waiting in line a woman came up and stood in line behind her and in the woman’s cart was the very kind of butter that she had been looking for.  When my wife asked the woman where she had found the butter, the woman said that it was very difficult to explain its location.  She then immediately took her butter out from her cart and placed it in my wife’s cart.  ‘Please take this butter.  I’ll get another one.’  My wife was so shocked that before she could respond, the woman took her cart and left the line.  My wife did not see her again.  I can’t ever remember someone doing something like that at Costco or anyplace else!  If that’s not spiritual climate change, I don’t know what is.”   ~Pastor from a Honolulu Church

These are just a few of the many stories that are arising as a result of E Pule Kakou.  I am so excited.  Mahalo to all of you who participated!  It truly was a wonderful day of blessing for all of Hawai’i.  The Kingdom of God was already present in the islands but through the prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings, and petitions of tens of thousands of people on that day, it surely seems that the Kingdom of God is manifest in yet deeper ways throughout Hawai’i.

There were over a hundred seventy churches that had registered for E Pule Kakou and there were many more who took the time to pule for Hawai’i but had not registered with E Pule Kakou.  In addition, there were over 20 other organizations and groups that registered to pray on that day in schools, businesses, and workplaces throughout Hawai’i.  Thousands prayed with the radio stations throughout the day on their own.  Many individuals prayed on their own or with their families the days surrounding November 26.  I don’t think that we reached our goal of 130,000 people praying and it is very difficult to get the count in but it was still a huge time of prayer from all of Hawai’i.  The spiritual climate over Hawai’i has changed.

Indeed, the unity in Christ that God is forging in Hawai’i is quite profound.  Congregations and churches that had never come together are coming together in prayer.  Whilst we recognize the obvious differences we have, we can also rejoice in Christ in our key points of unity in the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, and the authority and centrality of the Bible.  The result of this unity as stated in Psalm 133 is that there the Lord commands a blessing and I believe that God is blessing and will continue to bless Hawai’i in even greater ways.

This is just the beginning.  We are going to do another E Pule Kakou on Sunday, May 31, 2009.  This is Pentecost Sunday and we will encourage all of Hawai’i to go to participating churches to pray again.  It also happens to be the Global Day of Prayer and we will be joining the swelling wave of prayer of over 200 million believers across the world.   Hawai’i is going to be the final place where this wave crests.  It is going to be incredible.  Please join us and encourage other churches, leaders, businesses, homes, and organizations to join in as well.

Aloha,

E Pule Kakou Core Team

(The latest reports follow Cal's article.)

...............................................................................................

From Cal Chinen:

Pastor Guy Kapeliela reported that two congregations came together at their facility with Hope Chapel Waimanalo and Hope Chapel Olomana.  The place was filled to overflowing so that people had to be turned away.

Pastor Russell Higa of Honolulu Christian Church called to say that their E Pule Kakou filled their sanctuary as One Love, University Avenue Baptist, and their church congregations came together for prayer.

At all three Kamehameha School campuses of Kapalama, Keaau, and Maui, thousands of students from Kindergarten to High School, administrators, and teachers prayed for their schools, families, and all of Hawai'i.

Word of Life Christian Center was so moved by God to pray that they called for a 10 day fast on the days leading up to E Pule Kakou.

Pastor Daryl Yamada reported that five churches came together in the Mililani community and that they had Principals or Vice Principals from all but one school in their community.  They were able to pray for each one of them.  Their people were greatly encouraged.

Pastor Rob Gross reported that five churches in Kaneohe came together and had a wonderful time of prayer together.  Moreover, they gathered with a number of teachers from several of the Kaneohe Schools prior to work that day in order to pray for their schools.

At the State Capitol, The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, Hope Chapel of the Pacific, and MoanaluaGardens Missionary Church along with people from many other congregations came together to seek God's face.  The unity and blessing between Catholics and Protestants became the foundation for God to bless the whole evening.

There were other protestant and catholic joint services and to my knowledge, this was the first time that so many came together in Spirit and Truth in prayer for Hawai'i.  Other churches reported that it was their largest prayer services that they had ever had.  Another church was so moved by their prayer time that they plan to have an E Pule Kakou every quarter.

There were also reports of E Pule Kakou gatherings around the State in small groups and homes.  There were groups at:

  • The Federal Building.
  • Schools throughout the state.
  • Bishop Street, Richard Street, and other places throughout downtown Honolulu in the business sector.
  • One person reported of a prayer gathering for her exercise class for senior women, most of whom were un-churched.
  • There were two groups that met at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
  • Believers report of prayer going on for non-Christians because of E Pule Kakou.

King's Chapel Eleele and King's Chapel Hanamaulu - Kauai

From Monica Zenger

Praise Report: We had a strong attendance, both our church locations participated in the prayer time. The prayer from Duke Aiona was very effective.  Thank you for including us in the historical event. We look forward to the next time of state wide prayer.

New Life Christian Church Maui

From Pastor David Mauliola

Praise Report: Within our service, the Holy Spirit had free reign.  It first started with repentence for our actions and words said against our state and county leaders.  Forgiveness broke the bondage. Secondly, testimonies abounded with thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father.  When this was done, the intercession of prayers were laid at the foot of Jesus.  2 Chronicles 7:14: "for God WILL HEAL OUR LAND."

It was an awesome evening of prayer to be continued onward with the expectency of God showing himself REAL more and more in the state of Hawaii.

Excited for the next E Pule Kakou in May, encourage more believers to take part of this historic event with NO WALLS and MORE LOVE.....For God gets the GLORY!

Aiea High School

From Victoria El-Swaify

Praise Report: God told me to do E Pule Kakou at my high school this year (Aiea High School), and not wanting to disobey, I took action immediately! I don't think anything like E Pule Kakou has happend in the history of Aiea High School. On November 26, at least 15 people showed up (all students), and we are continuing to pray every Wednesday! More and more students have been coming, all different kinds, non-Christians included, and we pray with no shame as God takes over our circle of students. I feel the Holy Spirit at Aiea, and I know God's glory will penetrate Aiea's campus more and more. Yay Jesus!!!!

Network 2000 LLC

From Linda Hirai

Praise Report: A group of seven met at 7 am in the morning to pray.  There was a undercurrent of anxiousness, as some were unfamiliar with corporate prayer and we were a mix of managers, owner and employees.  But the Lord joined us together as one body as we prayed silently for forgiveness, then praised and thanked Him and petitioned Him aloud.  It was a declaration of renewal as we dedicated ourselves, our company, and our community back to the Lord - it all belongs to Him!  Praise God for this special opportunity to pray with our fellow believers across Hawaii!

Bethany Assembly of God

From Don Yoshida

Praise Report: We had a joint prayer Thanksgiving Service with Oahu Salvation of Souls Assembly of God, pastored by John Opeta.  We had a powerful time of praise and worship intermingled with prayers led by different pastors.  After the prayer for the Body of Christ, we celebrated communion together.  We had around 140 in attendance. We had one who has been living in his car and hanging around the church come to the service.  He has never come into the church or attend services.  That night he came to the service and accepted the Lord as his Savior.

Hope 968 & One Love Ministries Honolulu

From Pastor Joe Elies

Praise Report: Hope 968 and One Love Honolulu came together to pray at the UH Art Auditorium on the night before Thanksgiving. We had a wonderful time of worshiping God in song, giving thanks for our many blessings and praying for our island, schools, government, and churches! Thank you to all who organized this!

Elevate

From Liza Kobayashi

Praise Report: We partnered with Haili Church and did a joint gathering.  We had 39 total come and had at least five different churches represented.  We also had the children participate having them first pray with their parents as families, and then having the children and any interested adults going around the room and laying their hands on labeled posters and then writing down what they were given.   Most of the adults then broke into small groups, each with mixes of people from different churches/ages, and praying for each other.  We left encouraged, especially in seeing God growing us as the Body of Christ in true unity.

Here's what was on the posters:

*SCHOOLS-  Change--->Love--->Legacy--->Strength
  -Shaking, breaking, cracking
-Will become centers of evangelism when His Spirit moves mightily

*WORK-     saw a hand opening up--as Christians freely give, they will freely receive

*FAMILIES- 1st Things 1st
-Husbands and fathers arise!  You are a reflection of Jesus to your families!  Eph. 5:25-26, Ephesians 6:4 (and a picture of a heart)

*HILO-COMMUNITIES- (this is the poster most of the children were drawn to and wrote the most on-  FAITH,  PEACE,  HAPPINESS and JOY were written in different spots on the poster

  -Love and compassion grows here
-Hilo is founded on the rock of Jesus  (has a solid foundation)
-He will reign in this place.  His glory will shine through those with a heart for Him.

-His people will quickly draw near to Him.
-"I'm doing a new thing here- different from the other islands"
-He loves this city and it is special

Pacific-Islands Bible Church
Mililani, Oahu
Pastor Mark Turansky
On Sunday, November 23rd, Pacific-Islands Bible Church dedicated its entire Sunday morning service to E Pule Kakou.  During our prayer share time there were many tears shed as we bore one another's burdens before the Lord.  We also rejoiced with each other as praise reports were shared publically.  We closed off one section of our sanctuary and created a "prayer room" where many people went to have private moments with God or to pray in small groups.  There was no formal message, instead, we had a powerful worship time where we focused on the glory and majesty of who God is and His greatness in our lives.  E Pule Kakou was a resounding success to all of us at PIBC!

Moanalua High School
Honolulu, Oahu
From Dae Shik Kim
Praise Report: On the morning of November 26th, about 40 of us gathered in the center courtyard (Mene Square) of Moanalua High School.  We had a time of worship and then a few students said prayers for our school.  We talked and prayed about violence, blessing our teachers and administrators, being united as a family on campus, and the desperation to see God's presence and Kingdom here on our campus!  We have been having prayer every Wednesday morning since See You At the Pole (09.24.08) and we are going to continue to pray for revival in Moanalua High School!

Lighthouse Christian Fellowship
Waimanalo, Oahu
From Pastor Bill Youngs

Praise Report:
We had prayer at Makapu`u Point Lookout.  It was awesome!  There were three churches represented: Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, Hope Chapel Eastside and Hope Chapel Kailua!  We had over thirty of us standing at the East Gate praying for revival in our islands.  Families with children were there.  All the children were in the center with the adults around them in a circle.  There was a vision shared about how we need to stand around our little ones and cover them in prayer because they are the next generation that will bring the light to these islands.  At the end of our time, we prayed for each other and the little children were praying for the adults!  It was awesome!  A child shall lead them!

We really felt like the love and presence of God shining down on us as bright as the lighthouse at Makapu'u  Point.

Everyone there was so blessed that we are going to gather there again near Easter and pray for all the churches for more souls to be saved! Amen!  Aloha ke Akua!

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship
From Brenda Wong

Praise Report: We began our evening with our annual Thanksgiving Eve outreach dinner! After a fun time of feasting and celebrating with many new and old friends, we had a powerful time of prayer and worship! We began by worshipping and thanking God! Then we broke up in small groups and prayed for UH and all schools that God's love would flow and that God would heal and bring light to the darkness there. We had a powerful time of praying for Hawaii and prayed for reconciliation, healing and God's power and justice to be seen in the islands!

Wai`oli Hui`ia Church
Hanalei, Kauai
From Kahu Alpha Goto

We participated in "E Pule Kakou" on Thanksgiving Eve.
We followed the suggested format and had a small but "energetic" group. FYI: Rep. Mina Morita saw a TV commercial for E Pule Kakao, right before I contacted her to invite her. She came with her granddaughter, and we laid hands on her and prayed for our other government employees.

Mahalo Ke Akua for your ministry & efforts!

Abundant Life Ministries- Waikoloa

From Pastor Lani Larrua

At the Hilton Waikoloa Village, we gave God thanks for carrying our burdens big and small.

                           ....................................................................

Waianae Assembly of God
From Pastor Jeff Yamashita
Praise Report: Dear Saints,

What a glorious time we had seeking God in prayer last night at Waianae High School cafeteria!  Several Waianae Coast churches gathered together for “E Pule Kakou,” hosted by the Christian Club of Waianae High School and Waianae Assembly of God.  Also represented were the House of Angels with Pastor Harry Simons, Hope Chapel Waianae with Pastor Jr. Keller, Kaala View Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Brito, and other believers from Word of Life, Victory Outreach, Powerhouse Ministries and City of Joy Assembly of God.

There were a hundred adults, teens and children, calling on God for His intervention in our government, military, education, schools/faculty/students, wayward teens, people with suicidal tendencies, drug and alcohol addictions, our community, island, state, nation and the world.  Calvin Endo (Marketplace Pastor of Waianae High School and Christian Club advisor) coordinated the event.  He shared the theme for the night in Deuteronomy 30 – “Prosperity After Turning to the Lord and the Offer of Life or Death.”

The Praise & Worship Team of Waianae Assembly of God led the group in a powerful time of singing unto the Lord.  Then a flow of pastors, church leaders, marketplace ministers and young people came to the microphone to share in testimony and prayer.  The Holy Spirit moved in such a sweet and wonderful way that united the Body of Believers as one in the Lord.  It was a time of sincere repentance and thanksgiving!  We came with contrite hearts to the King of kings and Lord of lords.  A contrite heart is filled with a sense of guilt and desire for atonement (reconciliation) or is caused by or showing sincere remorse, which was very evident in our assembly.  Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.  Isaiah 57:15 For this is what the high and lofty One says – He who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite."

Upon entering the school grounds there is a huge sign on the wall of a building in front that read LOKAHI (unity), which I believe was prophetic for such a time as this.  This event has brought the church together, all across the Hawaiian Islands and pleases the Lord.  We are to be steadfast or stand firm in unity (I Corinthians 15:57-58) as we offer up our petitions for the State of Hawaii.  Righteousness in the Lord will prevail in our land!  Hallelujah!  Come Lord Jesus! Again, "E Pule Kakou" in the name of the Lord Jesus.

From Daven Yamada

Praise Report: We had a great time of prayer right in the heart of downtown in the TOPA Building on the 20th floor.  We had over 50 people come out from different churches and businesses on Thanksgiving Eve!

                   ..................................................................

Mililani Presbyterian Church & Christ Lutheran Church
From Jim Tweedie
Praise Report: Over 70 people gathered for worship at Mililani Presbyterian Church on Thanksgiving Eve to praise and worship God, to share the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper and to be "united in prayer."  This is an annual service shared between MPC and Christ Lutheran Church (also an "E Pule Kakou" endorser).  Also present were members and pastors from the Samoan (non-UCC) Congregational Church and the Hanmi (Korean) Presbyterian Church that share our MPC facilities.

As we shared the prayer of unity together I was deeply moved by the unity shown in this gathering, representing so many different cultures, races, languages and denominations (several members of our Chuuk Pentacosal church were also present).  We were a small microcosm of Hawaii itself, by every worldly standard divided and fragmented by our diversity.  But, because of our common Lordship of Jesus Christ were were united as one people, one family, one body, one true and indivisible church.  As Jesus said, "The gates of hell shall not prevail against it!"

May our unity in prayer encourage every Christian and every church in Hawaii to move closer and closer to the celebration of the eternal and blessed unity that has been gifted to us through the life, death, resurrection and victorious return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Living Waters Assembly of God
From John Trusdell
Praise Report: We met in both our locations (Hilo & Honomu). For many it was the first time participating in an event like this. Every area of prayer was led by a different leader or member. I know we are reaping fruit from this and other times of strategic prayer.
Thanks for including us in this vital event.

                       .....................................................................

Kakumakapili Church
From  Audrey Kawaa
Praise Report: Prayer time was held at noon so people could attend during their lunch hour.  Contact and invitations were sent to:  St. Elizabeth's Lutheran Church, Palama Settlement, Tamashiro Market, Kaiulani Elementary School, Farrington High School, Honolulu Cosmpolitan Church, and Queen Liliuokalani Children's Center.  We indicated that we would pray for them even if they couldn't make it.  Approximately 30 people were present. Praise and Worship and prayer offerings led by Kahu Richard Kamanu, Kahu Dean Fujii, of the Hawaii Conference United Church of Christ, and Audrey Kawaa, Deacon, were offered.  It was small, intimate, and prayerful.

I am submitting this report for Mary Ann and George Chinen, residents of Hale Mohalu, 800 Third St., Pearl City.  Mary Ann is a member of my weekly Bible Study group.  She brought the E Pule Kakou event to her Wednesday fellowship group led by Moanalua Assembly of God at the site.  Thirteen people participated in E Pule Kakou in prayer, praise and worship, Wednesday morning.

                     ....................................................................

Glad Tidings Church
From Pastor Renee Godoy
Praise Report: We praise God for this united effort of prayer for our state.  We felt strongly that this was ordained of God and believed that God's heart would be moved by all the churches in the state coming together to pray for one purpose.  We prayed with the Lt. Governor at our annual Thanksgiving service and luncheon where we served 500 plates of food to the needy in our community as well as our own members that were present.

We also dedicated our entire Midweek service to prayer on the night of the 26th.  We opened the prayer portion of the service with everyone praying together with the Lt. Governor and continued to pray for our government and community leaders.  We had about twice as many people as we usually do come out and respond to the call to pray.  We look forward to more opportunities to partner together to pray for our state.  Keep up the good work United in Prayer!

I distributed packets from the meeting we had in Hilo to a few other churches.  I know that Sure Foundation used the DVD of the Lt. Governor to pray with their church.

Kawaiahao Church
From Curt Kekuna
Praise Report: It was a blessing to have visitors come & pray with us for "E Pule Kakou".  Families, neighbors, government, military, countries, economy etc were all topics of prayer.  But having the privilege of bringing names, perhaps for the first time, to the His Throne, was electrifying!
As a result, we have made three commitments.  First, we will be committed to bringing individual names to Our Lord every day whether we know them or not.  Second, we will continue to pray corporately every Wednesday night from 6pm to 7pm whether we have 200 or 2.  Third, we will prepare for the next "E Pule Kakou".
Mahalo to the visionairies who have inspired Hawaii to become a place of prayer.  Aloha Na Hoaaloha o Pule

Mauka-Makai Ministries / Good Shepherd Church
From Max Fowler
Praise Report: Many filled our sanctuary as we devoted ourselves to pray for our community.  We gathered prayer requests from teachers at our local elementary school, and gave thanks for their awesome service and committment to the keiki of Liliha.  We sensed that God was really moving in our midst, through the worship and prayer!  It was a powerful night, and we look forward to the next E Pule Kakou!  Praise God!

Kalihi Union Church
From Bill Rutledge
Praise Report: We had about 150 attend E Pule Kakou.  I would have liked more, but those who came were really blessed and were a blessing.  We really felt the presence of the Lord in our meeting.  It was one of the best prayer times we have had for a while.

United Gospel Fellowship
From Pastor Bill Byers
Praise Report: Our E Pule Kakou service started at 6:30 p.m. and continued past 9:30 p.m.  there was such an open heaven over the service. Here is one quick testimony I thought you would enjoy.

My wife had surgery about 8 weeks ago on her foot. She had to wear a protective boot for approx. 6 weeks. She could never find another shoe for her other foot that was the same height sole - the result was that it put her back "out". The last few nights her sciatic nerve was so inflamed that she had to take some heavy pain killers just to sleep.

Last night in the service the Lord spoke to my heart that He was going to bring healing while the service was progressing. We sang a few songs to open the service to thank Him, praise Him and the service moved into a beautiful worship in the Spirit. During this time of worship and adoration of the King, my wife began to sway back and forth with her hands lifted up, she testified that she was consumed by His love and His compassion, totally abandoned to His Presence. While she was swaying back and forth, He put her back back in place. Everything popped and returned to normal and all the pain left immediately ...  This was the power of God, she had tried everything she knew to adjust her back to relieve the pain ... No one laid hands on her, no special prayer for the sick at this time ... just worshiping in His Presence and the Holy Spirit laid His hands on her to make the necessary adjustment ... Bless His Name!

It IS a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord and to sing praises unto the Most High!

The testimonies in our little group are amazing just in what the Lord was doing in people's hearts - but I thought you would enjoy this one today. We are pretty sure that we are going to continue to have an E Pule Kakou service once a month at United Gospel. If ever we needed to pray, it is now.

Aiea United Methodist Church & St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church
From Jim White
Praise Report: On Thanksgiving Eve, over 300 worshippers from the two congregations (Aiea United Methodist & St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church) met to worship & pray together at St. Elizabeth's in Aiea.  The Aiea UMC Samoan Choir brought special music... 4 people gave "Thanksgiving Testimonies" (2 from each congregation)... we sang hymns of praise to God... and we took time to pray with one another in small groups - for Hawaii, our Nation, and our own spheres of influence.  There was a tremendous spirit of unity as we gathered as One Body in Christ Jesus!  What a joy to see neighbors coming together in worship, united in prayer.  We have already committed to doing this again next Thanksgiving Eve!

Hope Chapel Kaneohe Bay

From Ralph Moore

Praise Report:  We've held a Thanksgiving eve service for many years, but this year was different in that people were more engaged during the prayer time.  You could tell that the Holy Spirit was moving in a special way as we gave thanks for God's many blessings and lifted up our country, state, economy, and our own families to the Lord.  Just over 500 of us joined with other believers that day to pray for Hawaii.
